The Tobler Lamina Spreader is a Cloward pattern lamina spreader built with extended 130 mm arms and a 51 mm spreading width. Surgeons use it for controlled distraction during laminectomy and in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), where the extra length matters most in patients with a deep posterior approach, a higher BMI or a thick neck. A threaded locking screw holds the spread exactly where you set it.

Description
Long Arm Lamina Spreader for Deep Exposures
A standard lamina spreader works well until the surgical field gets deep. In higher BMI patients, in revision cases and in muscular or thick necks, the distance from skin to bone can leave short arms barely reaching the lamina or the vertebral bodies. The Tobler Lamina Spreader follows the proven Cloward pattern but extends the arms to 130 mm, so the 3 mm tips seat firmly on bone while the hinge and locking screw stay above the wound and out of your line of sight.
Laminectomy and Posterior Decompression
During lumbar and cervical laminectomy, the spreader gently separates the lamina and posterior elements to open space for bone removal and neural decompression. It holds exposure steady across one or multiple levels, and the extra reach is most valuable in deep lumbar exposures where retracted paraspinal muscle sits well above the spine.
ACDF Distraction Without Pins
In anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, the Tobler can be placed directly on the adjacent vertebral endplates to open the disc space in a natural, parallel manner. Distraction pins can introduce twisting or rotational forces as the spine is distracted. Spreading at the endplates keeps the vertebral bodies aligned for disc removal, endplate preparation and graft or cage placement, with less reliance on extra hardware. The long arms keep that control available in patients with a thick neck or deep anterior anatomy.
Steady, Hands Free Distraction
A threaded rod with a thumb knob locks the arms at the exact spread you choose, up to 51 mm, and releases smoothly when you are ready to close. Once set, the spreader holds its position on its own, so both hands stay free for decompression or disc work and you can increase distraction step by step as the case requires.
